Upgrade Your Experience with Xbox Flight Simulator Controls

Discover the Best Flight Simulator Hardware for Xbox

If you want to experience Microsoft Flight Simulator at its best on Xbox Series X|S, we recommend upgrading from your traditional Xbox controller to a joystick or yoke system.
Flight Simulator hardware provides a more precise and realistic handling of your virtual aircraft compared to your Xbox controller. Getting yourself specialized hardware not only enhances your flight experience but also immerses you fully in the detailed (and sometimes challenging) world of Microsoft Flight Simulator. You'll experience the skies with unparalleled authenticity and control, far beyond what standard controllers can offer.

Please note: the Xbox flight controls listed on this page are only compatible with Xbox Series X|S.
There is currently no hardware that is compatible with cloud gaming.

Turtle Beach - VelocityOne

Whether you choose a VelocityOne Flightstick (joystick) or VelocityOne Flight Control System (yoke), you're choosing a complete set of flight controls.
With both controllers, you can access a set of full flight controls for Xbox Series X|S, including throttle(s) and rudder.
Looking to add extra realism to your simulator? Then you can add the VelocityOne Rudder to your setup as well.

Please note: your VelocityOne Rudder must be connected through your Turtle Beach flight controller to ensure compatibility with Xbox.

Making the Switch: from Xbox Controller to Flight Simulator Hardware

Transitioning from a standard Xbox controller to specialized flight simulator hardware can significantly enhance your flight simulation experience. Devices like the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas One, or Turtle Beach VelocityOne Flightstick, provide more precise control, better immersion, and access to advanced features that standard controllers lack. This hardware mimics the controls of real aircraft, making your flight simulations more realistic and enjoyable.

Choosing the right hardware

A joystick or a yoke is essential hardware for controlling your airplane in Flight Simulator.

A joystick is typically used in some GA (General Aviation) aircraft, different airliners (such as Airbus), fighter planes, and helicopters. A yoke is typical in most GA aircraft (like Cessna's) and airliners (such as Boeing or Bombardier).
If you prefer to fly aircraft controlled by a stick, choose a joystick; if you prefer those controlled by a yoke, opt for a yoke. If you're undecided, a joystick is a great starting point due to its versatility and ease of use.

When selecting your Xbox Flight Simulator controls, you need to be aware that different brands are not compatible with each other, unlike on PC.

Setting up your (new) flight controls

Setting up your flight controls on Xbox is easy. Set your joystick or yoke to Xbox mode (how this is done depends on your controller), connect it to a free USB port on your Xbox Series X|S, and you're ready to fly. Any other peripherals, such as rudder pedals or a throttle quadrant, must be connected directly to the primary flight controller (joystick or yoke) or to a device connected to the primary flight controller.

A few tips for optimizing your experience with Xbox Flight Simulator controls:

  • Familiarize yourself

Take some time to familiarize yourself with your new flight controller. A flight controller works differently than a standard Xbox controller and has more buttons. Learn the fundamentals of controlling your aircraft and where to find specific functions on your controller.

  • Fly training sessions

Take advantage of the training sessions in Microsoft Flight Simulator; they guide you in learning the basics of flight control, take-off, and landing. Even if you already have some flying experience, the training sessions help you get to know your new flight controller much quicker.

  • Experiment with settings

Experiment with different settings and configurations to find what works best for you. Customize the sensitivity and dead zones of your joystick or yoke for smoother and more precise control. Additionally, consider mapping essential functions to easily accessible buttons for a more efficient flying experience.
