Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Microsoft Flight Simulator is currently the most used flightsim platform.
It is known for its stunning visuals and is easy to start with.
We recommend MSFS2024 for new flightsimmers.

Selecting your Flight Simulator controller

Controlling an airplane with just your keyboard and mouse, or a gamepad, can be hard. It gets easier - and more realistic - when choosing a joystick or yoke. Most joysticks can control all three aircraft axes (pitch-roll-yaw), whilst most yokes can only control two (pitch-roll). That's why the recommendations above are mainly joysticks.

  • Joystick

A joystick is intuitive, and chances are that you have used a stick before.
(i.e., on a PlayStation- or Xbox controller)

Learning how to use a joystick as a flight stick is easy for most people and doesn't require much effort. One of the big advantages of a joystick is that you have control of three axes (pitch, roll, and yaw), which gives you full control of the aircraft.

  • Yoke

If you're intending to fly yoke-controlled aircraft (i.e., Cessna, Piper, or Boeing), we recommend using a yoke for more realism.

A yoke (sometimes referred to as an airplane steering wheel) usually gives you control of two axes (pitch and roll), which means that you're unable to control the rudder-axis (yaw).
We recommend choosing a yoke in combination with rudder pedals.

  • Throttle(s)

A throttle, or throttle quadrant, is used for power settings in an aircraft. Most throttles also have many programmable buttons.

Throttles are available in many variations, for different types of aircraft: from a single-axis throttle to a 6-axis customizable quadrant.
As most controllers already have throttles in some form, we think a stand-alone throttle is an add-on for advanced flight simulator pilots.

  • Rudder Pedals

For a perfect crosswind landing, or when taxiing your airplane on the ground, you need a set of rudder pedals.

Rudder Pedals add realism to your Flight Simulator setup. And, although rudder pedals are a hardware add-on for more experienced flightsimmers, if you don't have a rudder-axis on your joystick or yoke, we also recommend them for beginning virtual pilots.
